That night passed much the same as the one before, although the temperature might have stayed a little higher. They hurried with breakfast, and the men got to work.

Almost two hours later, a wagon pulled up, and Mr. Lange got out. Ethan came to greet him and took him to where they were working. Aida and Ruth followed.

After the introductions, Mr. Lange said, “I wanted to come to see how the building was going and invite all of you to supper tonight.”

John looked at his wife. “What do you think, Ruth?”

“I don’t know.” She looked down at her well-worn dress that had been let out as much as it could be to accommodate her girth.

Aida would have offered her a dress to wear, but she knew she didn’t have anything that would fit her. But she would try to reassure her.

“You look fine. I don’t see how you stay so clean and neat camping out the way you do.”

“Please come,” Mr. Lange said. “My wife and her sister will be disappointed if you don’t. When I left, they were baking up a storm. I’d say we’re going to have some mighty fine desserts.”

Clyde’s eyes lit up. “Come on, Ruthie. Go for me. It’s been a long time since I’ve had a cake or pie.”

“All right,” she agreed, “but I hope we don’t regret this.”
